Fluctuation - induced forces in critical fluids
The current knowledge about fluctuation induced long-ranged forces is summarized. Reference is made in particular to fluids near critical points, for which some new insight has been obtained recently. Where appropiate, results of analytic theory are compared with computer simulations and experiments.
متن کاملSchrödinger Invariance and Strongly Anisotropic Critical Systems
The extension of strongly anisotropic or dynamical scaling to local scale invariance is investigated. For the special case of an anisotropy or dynamical exponent θ = z = 2, the group of local scale transformation considered is the Schrödinger group, which can be obtained as the non-relativistic limit of the conformal group. The requirement of Schrödinger invariance determines the two-point func...

It is well known that nothing comes from nothing. In physics, however, this is not always the case. Surprisingly indeed, two electrically neutral conducting metallic plates placed in vacuum about half a micrometer apart attract each other, even at zero temperature, due to a force which was theoretically predicted in 1948 by the Dutch physicist Hendrik Casimir [1]. This force originates from the...

متن کاملFluctuation-induced casimir forces in granular fluids.
We numerically investigate the behavior of driven noncohesive granular media and find that two fixed large intruder particles, immersed in a sea of small particles, experience, in addition to a short-range depletion force, a long-range repulsive force. The observed long-range interaction is fluctuation-induced and we propose a mechanism similar to the Casimir effect that generates it: The hydro...
